2011 League Recaps

Teams are looking good this term!

We are almost halfway down the term now, and all the different leagues seem to be on a roll! What’s going on in soccer, volleyball, or dodgeball? Who’s on the lead in each league? Are there any teams who seem to be cruising through all their games? Here’s a small recap of what seems to be the most relevant and interesting aspects of each league so far. Sadly, I’m only going to focus on Elite and Tier 1, otherwise, this would be an incredibly long article.

Let’s start with ultimate! Teams will be glad to know that next weekend it’s playoff weekend for Term 1 games, which had to be cancelled last term due to snowfall. Be sure to bring your A game with you and try to win some nice REC champion t-shirts! As for what’s happening this term so far, team Absolut Ultimate seems to be unstoppable in Tier 1, winning every single one of their seven games up until now.

Nitobe Basketball League has an interesting competition going on this week. Check out this article for more information and the chance to win amazing prices! In men’s elite, competition seems to be rather close; the only team that’s come undefeated so far is Lehmans with five victories on their scoreboard. In women’s elite, The Beautiful Girls are also undefeated with five victories. Will these two teams be able to continue their winning strike or will the underdogs surprise us at playoffs?

Cross Volleyball League, one of the busiest ones here at REC seems to be full of action! In men’s elite, team Paranoia is unstoppable with eight wins and no losses. Competition is tough in the female division with no clear runner up so far. As for the coRec elite division, Team Swagg surely has its swag on as they’ve won all ten of their games so far. Props to many of the teams here, I’ve found people in this league to have come up with some of the funniest team names.

For those of you loving warm, indoors, fast paced soccer, SRC Futsal League has plenty of action to offer. In male elite, engineering team, Adam’s Apple is showing off its talent with four wins and no loses. Impressive? So is Abusement Park’s streak, with the same exact results. In the female 1 division, Alpha Females are on top of the table with four wins and one loss, yet they have to watch out because there’s a couple of teams up on their heels. This is one sport where you can’t be too confident!

Now for those seeking the real deal (a.k.a 11 on 11), competition is looking tough! Will it beThunderbird REZ or Rigs FC , both with no loses so far, to hold the championship title this term? For the female divison, can the Not Hot Damn Pi Gams continue their winning streak? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see…

After three weeks without football, teams at the Point Grey Cup Flag Football league must be looking forward for next weekend. Both the conVICKS and STAR STUDDED seem to be doing a great job in men’s tier 1, but competition is quite close overall. As for Women’s tier 1, congratulations to The Blowfish who have won every single one of their game and don’t have a single touchdown scored against them. Will they make it to the final with this perfect streak?

Don’t worry Ball Hockey, we haven’t forgotten about you. In men’s tier 1 NADS and 41 Shots seem to be on the lead for both the campus wide and divisional structures respectively with five wins each. In the corec division, Jackets on Top are on the lead with five wins as well and no losses. There’s also a team called OMM NOM NOM NOM. That’s awesome.

And last but not least, we got our beloved Todd Ice Hockey League. Commerce Capitalists, our winners from elite division last term are still on top with five wins and no losses. Will they be able to hold their champions title for another term? We will have to see.

Sadly, that is all for leagues so far. This term has shown quite interesting matches and a couple of injuries here and there. Will the winners from last term retain their title? Who knows…Stay tuned for more of what’s going on in leagues, and don’t forget to get ready for playoffs which are coming soon, starting March 14 for some. It’s game time!
